Winter Is Coming

Man, it got cold last night. It seems to have jumped from summer right into winter! We do still have beautiful leaves, pumpkins in the patch, warm cocoa in the mornings. But, too soon it will snow, the wind will howl...

One of the things I love about cold weather is fires in the fireplace but heck, they won't let us build fires in this apartment building. Guess they think we'll burn the place down!

I love to snuggle in bed with a handmade quilt pulled up under my chin. I was a quilter in my earlier days... when the hands didn't give out on me and my eyesight was better. I enjoyed piecing the tops but my favorite thing to do was do the hand quilting. I prefer a quilt any day over blankets.

I love steaming hot tea. I prefer the orange spicey ones with sugar, no cream. And, don't forget hot chocolate. The doc put me on a lactose free diet but I suppose I could make my own cocoa mix and use almond milk.

Yes, the cold winter days will be here before we know it... brrrr.

  1. I love the cooler weather to get outside. It's only in the 60s here in Florida today and yes....I have a sweater on! lol!

  2. Yep, we hit 28 this morning but it is up to 61 now with high 70's for the weekend. I'm OK with that, it is those windchill mornings that get me. Wonder if they would let you have electric fireplaces there. Not quite the real thing but pretty close.

  3. We had a heavy frost coating everything this morning. It's to be colder tonight.

  4. Not I! I have no weather complaints, but am shocked to see the foul weather in places I don't expect—Florida and Texas for starters. And snow? Crazy.

  5. We have a little electric fireplace with fake flames, but it's warm and cozy, and a lot easier than a real fireplace. I absolutely love the snuggly feeling of it.

  6. I would miss a fireplace in winter... spend lots of time sitting there reading...when it's too cold to go out. Cats used to love the fireplace too. And I love hot tea! I especially love Irish breakfast tea (with cream - but I use lactose-free evaporated milk). Lactose-free milk and evaporated milk taste just like regular milk. I've tried all the almond, cashew, coconut, etc. milks and they're OK... just not the same as cow's milk to me. Your cocoa with lactose-free milk should be fine, Latane.

  7. Hi, just found your site! I love the fireplace going and sitting under a nice quilt! I just bought cocoa for the cold nights coming! We had been enjoying sitting around our firepit, but nights are too cold now.

  9. I like quilts too. There is a place in my region where you can buy a Mennonite quilt at a reasonable price. I got a couple there.

  11. I admire your quilting talent - I have never made one and i have always enjoyed sewing - go figure! It is getting cold here in NY, too, so a cup of hot tea or cocoa sounds perfect for me right now! Thanks for visiting Pandora's Box!

  12. I can't quilt or even sew but I still love hand made quilts and have been fortunate enough to buy a couple. I rotate them on my bed so I get to see them...no use putting them away behind a closet door, right?
I'm so glad you were able to get back your genealogy information with the help of the tech person. I number of years ago my computer crashed and I lost all my info. I also used a service that got most of my 'stuff' back but the pictures, which were arranged by the year they were taken, are all jumbled together. Now I back everything up. A case of locking the door after the horse is stolen.

  13. Sadly, we cannot have a fireplace in our mill apt either, Latane, so we compromise with a small electric one. Then, we light a candle that has a wood burning scent. The weather here in Nashua, NH, today is pouring rain with thunder and lightning and the temps are in the mid 50s. But, I will have a cup of tea and cuddle up with a warm blanket later tonight.

  14. How are you with tolerating oat milk? It makes a really nice, creamy hot chocolatier or cocoa. You may have to a try a brand or two until you find the right one that suits your taste. I prefer the barista versions as they are creamier and thicker. Great for coffee.
