Last night as I lay in bed I started wondering what title I'd give myself. It's tough. I've always been way too hard on myself and never given myself credit for what I have done. So... Let's see I could be called an artist. I am a published author... but let's be realistic. I think I am a doodler!
Looked it up. A doodler is someone who doodles!! Doesn't fit. I have been creative all my life but I never doodled!
The first thing I ever did was learn to crochet. A newly wed with an infant on the way and I needed to act like Moms do... I needed to make that kid some clothes! So, a friend helped me learn the stitches and I crocheted some booties for that little bundle. and yes, I won a blue ribbon at the county fair with them.
I made doilies. Oh my.. did I ever. Remember the day when every room in every house had doilies all over the place. They were on tables, the backs of couches, draped over chair arms. Yep, I was way into the crocheting craze.
I made a toy or two and made myself a crocheted pin cushion (I still have the pin cushion). Those were very popular at one time.
Those, like all crafty things do, lost favor. So, I started to knit. Made myself a sweater.. it's a pretty shade of green and do you know... I still wear it and it must be a "hundred" years old by now.
And, I made my daughter one when she was in high school. Of course it's long gone. After all she is shall we say, AARP age. That got a blue ribbon, too.
I couldn't give up that urge. So. I started crocheting baby things again. After all, I had grandbabies and then great-grandbabies. Having that motherly instinct I needed to make those kids some clothes!!

I am so impressed! You have lots of talent. I did some crocheting and made a few blankets. I'm thinking I need to get back into it.
ReplyDeleteOkay, Latane, is there anything you can't do well? Ha! You have so many skills:) I took a crochet class once and made a baby blanket but I didn't continue crocheting and wish I had when I see what some ladies create by crocheting.
ReplyDeleteWhat nice projects! Yes I make booties for babies, scarfs and hats and baby blankets!
ReplyDeleteYou are talented.
ReplyDeleteLove crochet and knitting. I just don’t do it often enough.

Wow, those are all impressive and such good memories! I recently started crocheting again after not doing it for about 15 years. I love doing it while I watch TV or movies but I've always stuck to easy blankets and scarfs. Your projects look more complex and ribbon worthy! Thanks for sharing the pictures!
ReplyDeleteYou are very talented - I have never gotten the hang of crochet. During the height of covid, my daughter taught herself to crochet on You Tube. She made me lots of cute things. And I still have doilies all over my house that my mom made. She would have been 96 this year. (:
ReplyDeleteI have never crocheted or knitted, but have admired the creations of those who have done one or both. Your creations were beautiful, Latane, and amazing that you still enjoy the green sweater, which speaks to its being well made. You are definitely NOT a doodler, but a doer 😀
ReplyDeleteThey are all beautiful! I've tried both knitting and crocheting and I am just "all thumbs"! I think it truly is a talent (that some like I don't have) and you have it! andrea
ReplyDeleteI taught myself to both crochet and to knit. I have made a sweater, but crochet. I have only knitted dishcloths, and I think a scarf. I have always had learning to knit socks on my bucket list, but it hasn't happened. I do crochet booties, and blankets, and now use up scrap yarn to donate lap afghans to anyone in need. I just finished a baby blanket to donate to a pregnancy resource facility. Your work is outstanding!
ReplyDeleteI used to crochet too but thumb issues despite surgery make it challenging.
ReplyDeleteI have absolutely no aptitude for crochet or knitting. Or sewing, although I did take a course and sewed a dress for myself and one for each of my girls ( they were 4 and 2). I just didn't enjoy it. You obviously have talent and have made such pretty things.
ReplyDeleteYou are for sure 100 percent an amazing artist. Really love it. Yes, I crocheted at a young age because my dad's mom taught me. Love that. Such a fun creative thing to do. Cheers and Happy Weekend.
ReplyDeleteI quilt, but my mom crocheted. She used to make baby blankets, but it also killed her hands. I wish I had learned but am glad I didn't after I see what happened to her hands.
