Sometime you just stumble upon something and then you say, 'Why have I not known about this before now?'
This post is about romaine lettuce. Yep... just lettuce.
I grew up on iceberg, then switched over to butter lettuce and occasionally use mixed greens but you might say I was 'stuck in a rut.'
Then came that surprise grocery delivery on Jan. 26th and there was this bag with 3 heads of romaine lettuce in there. I started to give it away. I really did but then I thought better of that idea.
Fast forward to Feb. 20 when I ate the last of that lettuce. It was still fresh, green. I only lost 3 outer leaves in these 3 weeks that I had it.
Living alone I'd get so mad when I'd buy lettuce and in a couple days it would wilt, turn brown and in the trash it would go. Then, I got smart. I started wrapping my lettuce with a wet paper towel (don't wash the head of lettuce first) and dropping it into a small plastic grocery bag. Didn't close it or anything, just tossed it into the crisper drawer of the fridge.
Let me tell you... it works wonderfully with romaine! Like I say. I ate the last of that 3 weeks after getting it.
Now, I am hooked on that stuff! Just think what a surprise someone gave you can change your life. Well, maybe not my life but certainly my taste in the green stuff.
Boy, you can tell that I have run out of anything interesting to post about. Reducing to talking about lettuce is pretty low!

Interested in prolonging the life of celery? Wrap it in tinfoil.
ReplyDeleteWe generally eat iceberg lettuce too. But I do like Romaine. May use your tip to keeping it fresh... and Mona's tip for celery!
ReplyDeleteThat's a good tip! And maybe I need to try some Romaine too.
ReplyDeleteI usually buy the baby lettuce in the green plastic box. I'm going to buy the romaine next time. Thank you! I love the pictures of you in your header. You're so pretty!
ReplyDeleteI'll have to try that - my lettuce spoils.
ReplyDeleteI used to buy Romaine when I still had my bunny. She and I would eat it and, like you noticed, it lasts a long time.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'll tell you what Latane, I know people who buy romaine lettuce but I've never purchased it. I buy iceberg lettuce just like you and have experienced the same problem you had in it going bad before I had eaten very much of it. I found your blog to be interesting and will try romaine lettuce the next time I need lettuce. Thanks for the tip:)
ReplyDeleteSo great that now this helped you get hooked on it. Such a good lettuce.
ReplyDeleteWe like romaine also...especially with tomatoes!
ReplyDeleteI used to eat romaine all the time. Haven't for years though. It is always nice and with no waste. Your water color paintings are beautiful! You have a lot of talent. andrea
ReplyDeleteI'm hooked on green leaf lettuce, but my DIL makes the best salads using Romaine. I may just add some to my (online) grocery cart and try your method!

ReplyDeleteI used to buy iceberg all the time, then I tried romaine and I thought "eureka!". About two weeks ago I tried iceberg again and thought YUCK, why did it take me so long to switch? (:
ReplyDeleteGlad to read that you enjoyed the lettuce, Latane, and passed along that tip for making it last longer. We do the same, and also wrap scallion roots with a damp paper towel. Avocados also keep better when refrigerated.
ReplyDeleteI've been thinking about trying romaine. That helped me make a decision.
ReplyDeleteYou came along with this topic at the most fortuitous time and I appreciate the reminder and nudge. The quick review of the how to is most helpful as well. Thank you and have a wonderful day.
