I was down in the dumps this morning, have been inching in that direction for days.
1. I know that I am isolated too much
2. I know that I am stuck in a rut seeing the same residents and doing the same thing all the time.
3. I know that I see a slow-moving decline edging it's way into my life.
4. I know that I should be on top of the world that I am doing as well as I am
5. Now, what to do about it.
It helps that Shirley will pick me up around 11 tomorrow to eat at Cracker Barrel... It's turkey and dressing day!!
It helps that we will then go to get me some new hearing aids. Can you believe that I LOST my hearing aids at the wedding in Georgia? We never did locate them so I am in the market for new ones.
It helps that I just watched a documentary on Grounding/Earthing. It sounds weird, I know! But, I asked ChatGPT about it and was told it isn't fully supported by the scientific/medical community. Well, duh..I've known for years that the medical field isn't interested in trying things that will take away their profits.
Chatgpt said it would be beneficial to be outdoors. sit with my bare feet in the grass, connect with nature. It can't hurt a thing and will get me out of this apartment. Now, if it will just stop raining! EVERY DAY THIS WEEK!

I'm glad you have an outing with Shirley to look forward too. I think we all need things to anticipate in life. I've not heard of grounding/earthing and will look that up.
ReplyDeleteI hope your doldrums lift, that is likely an ever lurking problem for all us seniors. I got excellent hearing aids at a lower price at Costco, by the way. Outings are good to lift our spirits and I also reach out to people in need of a card or phone call. Bible study with 25 long time members always lifts my spirits. Grounding sounds like a good idea.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have heard of grounding. I should do it more, but to be honest, I stepped on a slug once (and they get really big here), and it grossed me out. I still get the shivers when I think of it. I could just scope out every blade of grass around me and then plant my feet for a spell.
ReplyDeleteI used to love my same routine, but this past year I have been moving away from that and I feel cognitively better. Plus its not as boring.
Oh that date with Shirley sounds delicious.
I'm anxious to hear if the grounding helps, Latane! Just yesterday we joined Costco and scheduled an appointment for Tom to check out their hearing aids. He has 2 pairs, but they're on the VA's 'injured reserve' bench. We've no idea how long before they're fixed/returned, and I'm beginning to fear for our marriage.
ReplyDeleteSit outdoors with your feet in a dish pan of warm soapy scented water. It can be spiritually refreshing giving your feet a spa moment. And, it’s fun to splash exercise.

Putting your feet in the grass sounds so nice! Glad you'll be getting out and about this week. Praying a change of scenery helps.
ReplyDeleteI understand it all, and fight the "dumps" often. I do find that sitting outside helps, I love sunny days and the birds always lift my spirit. Like you, we've had so many overcast days and rain I haven't been on the porch in a while. Hope you find the hearing aids you need and enjoy your outing.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that you have Shirley to take you out first to eat yummy food then to get new hearing aids. Hopefully a day out will help chase away the doldrums.
ReplyDeleteGetting out and meeting people boosts me.
ReplyDeleteI too feel isolated, but it's because we live in the country. I get so tired of my so-called friends telling me that I "live too far away" when they can literally drive here in 20-25 minutes. If you were my neighbor, I'd be inviting you to come sit on my porch and sip coffee or iced teas and enjoy some friendly conversation. Praying you get out of your dump feeling.
ReplyDeleteGoing barefoot in the grass is one of my absolute favorite things in life. Living in NY state, it doesn't happen for most of the year, but when I can kick my Birkenstocks off and walk in the yard, I love it. I'm glad you're going out with Shirley, I can totally understand getting restless. If I lived closer I'd go out and about with you, or just go barefoot in the grass!
ReplyDeleteOof - I feel all of this. I don't know about the medical community not supporting being outside. My doc regularly asks me about that, and socializing. I am somewhat self-isolating this week. Haven't moved my car from the garage since Tuesday. Also, if it could just stop raining for a few days! The grey skies do a number on me. Hope you are feeling better soon!
ReplyDeleteI love when it rains...when we have a good rain. When the house gets dark and i can stay in my pj's. i LOVE cracker barrel on thursday, we go for the turkey also. as for those "down in dumps" feelings, i am very mindful about chasing those thoughts away. every morning i put my feet on the floor and say out loud, today is going to be great. i write down all the things i can do that day and do them. i still have some work i do from home and i have a lot of hobbies, that helps. but i do have days where i just can't shake it off. i allow myself those days. are you still able to bake, i enjoy baking and i am pretty sure you paint...do you have the supplies you need to paint?? try not to be too hard on yourself, i am ALWAYS in awe of you!!
ReplyDeleteAll of the previous comments were great suggestions and it shows that you are not along in feeling in the dumps at times, Latane. The same happens to me as well and now that nice weather and a new park is nearby, I have been going for nightly walks and plan to bring my book and read there as well. Too much indoor time isn’t good for our spirits.
ReplyDeleteI hope you are feeling better by now Latane. We all get hit over the head by the 'down-in-the-dumps' fairy stick. It's lovely to read all the caring comments you've been left with very good ideas. I've always thought that a change of scenery does us good and I've read that you went to Cracker Barrel with your sweet daughter. Sounds like you're feeling better and I'm happy for you.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry about the slump. Question for you. How goes your book writing? I believe, I hope I'm recalling right, you were going to write one and if not, my gosh, you're writing, I just love it. I've said that before and I truly love it. I don't know if you know Polly. She writes well too.
